Shark Social Media

Jaws is often cited as the first horror film to truly terrify the world. While certainly not as shocking or frightening as The Exorcist or The Shining, Spielberg’s film gripped the audience’s psyche with its plausibility. There’s an eerily disconcerting feeling that accompanies stepping into the ocean – an alien world where humans are not the apex predator and there’s an array of strange wildlife lurking in the depths.

Western Australia has long been a bastion of shark activity – specifically of the great white variety – and their presence near beaches and coastlines has presented a problem for government officials who wish to respect wildlife but also ensure public safety. They may have found a solution to that issue which satisfies both sides of the coin with social media.

Faced with the very real possibility that they would have to begin baiting and killing sharks that come too close to shore – and wanting to avoid that possibility – biologists in Western Australia have devised a 21st Century solution that protects both the public and the shark population. 338 sharks in the area have been tagged with acoustic transmitters that automatically issue warnings to Surf Life Saving Western Australia’s Twitter feed when a shark comes within a half-mile of the shoreline. The updates also provide information such as the shark’s breed and weight.

This is another example of the many practical applications of social media, and the life-saving benefits it can provide as a result of its real-time nature. By utilizing the possibilities available with online-technology, the Western Australia brain trust provided a solution that preserves the lives of beach-goers and native wildlife, and avoided the scuba tank-rifle-exploding shark scenario of Jaws. It’s yet another illustration of the ever-expanding list of ways that social media is being used to solve real-world problems, and a promising standard set for communities facing similar issues.

Happy New Year from PR/PR

new year

2013 brought many changes, some expected and some out of left field – but the year’s events have enabled us to mature as a company. We look forward to continued success in 2014, and the same for our clients and contemporaries.

Everyone, have a safe and Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas from Orlando!

Lake-Eola1Christmas

I am currently writing this from my remote-office, also known as my parents’ kitchen table. Russell is making pit-stops at every In-N-Out Burger in Palm Springs, California, Lindsay is enjoying presumably winter-weather in Georgia, and Amanda is probably up to her eyeballs in wrapping paper and wedding planning materials. It’s Christmas Eve at PR/PR!

We hope you all have a great and safe Christmas, give eggnog the appreciation it deserves, spend plenty of time with family and friends, and we will see you after the holiday!

An Orca-strated Failure

blackfish

Among the living, breathing beings populating SeaWorld for its annual Bands, Brew and BBQ concert series, it’s looking like one of them won’t be a captive audience. On Monday afternoon, .38 Special announced they were cancelling their appearance, becoming the eighth scheduled artist to drop-out of the event amid the public backlash surrounding the Blackfish documentary.

Since it was broadcast to a national audience on CNN in October, there has been a substantial outcry for the theme park to abandon its practice of keeping orcas in captivity for performance purposes. SeaWorld has maintained a generally neutral approach to the controversy – possibly to avoid attracting further scrutiny – but with musicians continuing to abandon their bookings and a constant deluge of negative press, it’s apparent that the issue is not just going to go away.

Documentaries, for all their claim of journalistic impartiality, are created with an agenda. Whether it’s to merely heighten awareness of a specific matter or deliver a persuasive argument, documentarians have a desired objective in mind when they begin their projects. But I’ve never witnessed a public so-galvanized by a film then what’s occurring with Blackfish, and I’m fairly certain even the filmmakers are astonished at the level of reaction that’s led to the Bands, Brew and BBQ quagmire. One thing is certain: SeaWorld has a massive, massive PR problem on its hands, one that threatens to undermine its projected image of a park based on nature education, rescue and conservation.

So what, if any, recourse does SeaWorld have? Short of phasing out its Shamu shows and focusing on wildlife awareness and traditional theme park attractions, I’m not entirely sure. As scientific research has revealed the adverse effects captivity has on animals, the tides of opinion have begun to turn (that’s the only other pun, I promise) against for-profit zoos and aquariums; and if Bands, Brew and BBQ is any indication, it spells potential disaster for SeaWorld’s future marketability in its current incarnation.

NOFX Demonstrates Longevity

nofx

Tonight I’m going to see NOFX, the seminal Southern California punk band that is celebrating thirty-years in existence. Yes, the guys that wrote such ageless tunes as “The Separation of Church and Skate” and “Hobophobic (Scared of Bums)” are all pushing 50, and although they tout their perennial laziness regarding touring and recording – show no signs of slowing down. NOFX has achieved a level of longevity that many envision but relatively few achieve. Sure, guys like Eddie Money can cut sketchy commercials and perform for county fair attendees bent on draught-beer and deep-fried Twinkies, but this isn’t the type of longevity that most aspire to. A career of sustained-success involves a few factors, a few of which are mentioned below.

Maintaining the Message

The fastest way to end up in professional purgatory is straying too far from the path. Message consistency is essential to giving yourself the strongest shot at prolonged success.

Taking Reasoned Risks

This point may seem counter to the former, but it is right in line with a formula for longevity. Any endeavor requires a level of risk to be assumed; the key is the word ‘reasoned.’ In the early-nineties, Garth Brooks was one of the biggest musicians on the planet, and then he decided to adopt an alter-ego and release a rock album under the moniker ‘Chris Gaines.’ This was not reasonable, and prompted fans to wonder if he’d lost his mind. A reasoned risk involves banking on your knowledge and expertise, not assuming another reality in some kind of odd performance art in an effort to provide something ‘new.’

Understanding Your Audience and Their Expectations

If I walked into the concert venue tonight and NOFX began playing Steely Dan covers, I would walk – no, run – out. Your target audience has a perception of you and your topic/style/delivery, and adhering to and satisfying those expectations gives you the best shot at maintaining them over the course of a career.

Providing a Quality Product

This shouldn’t have to be mentioned, but unfortunately there are some individuals who think that name-value should move units alone. If what you’re pushing doesn’t live up to standards, that word will quickly spread, and your career will begin to trend southward.

So tonight I will be watching one of my favorite bands that are still performing their craft at the apex of their ability, and are an example of longevity in the face of mounting odds. While enduring success at this level is usually the exception and not the rule, by following the above steps you can give yourself the best shot at achieving it.
